GRAND EGYPTIAN MUSEUM Competition projects of Czech and Slovak architects

VELKÉ EGYPTSKÉ MUZEUMsoutěžní návrhy českých a slovenských architektů The competition, which was launched by the Ministry for Culture of the Arab Republic of Egypt, under the patronage of UNESCO and International Union of Architects (UIA), represents unique event in the history of architectural competitions. With the large amount of submitted entries it became the biggest architectural competition of all time. The purpose of the competition was to design a museum complex in the unique locality in close proximity of the great pyramids of Giza.

The Museum is meant to house and exhibit more than 140,000 artifacts of the ancient Egyptian civilisation, it will become the largest museum of Egyptian antiquities in the world. It will also be the first global virtual museum, utilizing the latest computer and communication technology, it will offer the potential for linkages with other museums all over the world. The museum complex, of an overall area of 86 000 sqm, makes provision for the three million visitors per annum. 3000 teams from 105 countries registered for the competition. In the first phase, 1557 projects from 82 countries were presented to the international jury. The jury selected 20 project, the authors of which were invited to further develop their design concepts.The competition entered 20 Czech and 8 Slovak teams.
